Yet one Horsham mum has taken that very brave step in order to follow her passion. Sitting pretty with her immaculate blonde hair in her newly opened home salon, Helen Green is a world away from the pharmaceutical industry she was in after she graduated from Brighton University with a BSc (Hons) Biological Science degree. But it was an opportunity she couldn’t pass up.

“I went to work for Wyeth Pharmaceuticals and then Pfizer (the worlds largest research based pharmaceutical company) as a medical sale representative and promoting medicines”, explains the 31 year old.

“But after 10 years the opportunity came up to be made redundant , so I got redundancy money and decided to do what was really my main interest”. Helen retrained in beauty which subsequently led her to open the salon, Beau-Belle Beauty, at her home in May. When asked about the name, Helen revealed it was in fact her chihuahua, Bella, who inspired the aptly-named business. “She’s lovely”, she beams. “I’m always going into town giving out leaflets to people and everyone loves her. They’re always coming up striking and cuddling her so she features quite highly in my business”, she laughs. “I was going to call it Bella Beauty but that name had already gone. I then came up with the name ‘Beau-Belle Beauty’ which means beauty in French for men, beauty in French for women and obviously beauty in English”.

Walking I to the salon the smell of scented candles and the light pink chic vintage-style decor radiates relaxation. After a hard day at work, a pampering session at Helen’s salon is a temptation hard to turn down. With offers including 20% per cent off for new clients first booking, loyalty cards, recommend a friend schemes and gift vouchers, Helen also believes she can offer a friendly and professional service.

“Being at home you get a much more individual experience” she adds. “Free parking straight outside, free WiFi, private location and no need to walk through the town after treatments such as waxing which could leave you skinMagazine article a little red”. Clearly oozing passion for her new job Helen gives a taste for what’s hot in the world of beauty and what she enjoys most about her job.

“Eyelash extensions are something that’s really popular at the moment and Shellac nails UV gel polish”, she smiles. “The two most popular treatments I do. Everybody love the Shellac because it lasts up to two weeks. Also eyelash extensions are one lash on one lash so it looks really natural. After completing a good job on somebody it makes you feel really good, you get a lot of job satisfaction”. Starting a new business is a challenging prospect in itself, but throw children and child are into the picture and it can make the task a near impossible juggling act. But Helen feels setting up base at home has been a bonus, especially when it comes to her three year old son Jack.

“As a mother it gives me more opportunities to spend time with him but also be at home with clients so its great”, she says. “It’s made me much happier, it’s something I really enjoy and I’m working for myself as we’ll, so no regrets whatsoever”. So with this in mind, and an arguably bright future in front of her, what’s next for Helen?

“Obviously I’m still very new but the people I have seen so far have really liked it” she adds. “I’m glad I did my degree and have that behind me but its really good that I’ve build up to where I am now”.

“My long term goal is to design and launch my fantastic new website which is currently under construction and my dream would be to open my own salon/bar eventually leading to a chain.
